I decided since it takes me so long to read books during the school year, I’d start posting something at the beginning of ever book, instead of just the end.  So from now on I’ll provide the first paragraph of whatever new piece I am reading, in case that should capture someone enough to try the book.  Here is the first from the novel I just began, Matthew Pearl’s The Dante Club.

The Dante Club

By Matthew Pearl

“John Kurtz, the chief of the Boston police, breathed in some of his heft for a better fit between the two chambermaids.  On one side, the Irish woman who had discovered the body was blubbering and wailing prayers unfamiliar (because they were Catholic) and unitelligible (because she was blubbering) that prickled the hair in Kurtz’s ear; on the other side was her soundless and despairing niece.  The parlor had a wide arrangement of chairs and couches, but the women had squeezed in next to the guest as they waited.  He had to concentrate on not spilling any of his tea, the black haircloth divan was rattling so hard with their shock.”

Into Thin Ai

—4—

This book, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, is a first-hand account of the Mount Everest Disaster in March of 1996.  Outside magazine sent Krakauer, a journalist, to the mountain to chronicle his ascent.  As he climbs the book gets more and more ominous, and by the end of the summit day 8 climbers are dead.  Factors leading to the tragedy are explained, his survivors guilt is addressed, and the whole book is haunting and nerve-racking.  Even though what was to happen on the mountain was already known, throughout the book I found myself hoping for a different outcome.  A good read, but very sad.

Tyrannosaur Canyon

—3—

Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston begins as Tom Broadbent comes upon a shot prospector in a New Mexico canyon. The prospector, Stem Weathers, makes Broadbent promise to give a code-incripted notebook to his daughter.  Broadbent finds himself tailed by an assasin trying to get this notebook, hired by a paleontologist seeking an almost perfectly preserved T. Rex hidden in the canyons.  The dialoge and action are sometimes ridiculous, but being the biggest dinosaur fan ever, it was worth the time to read.  From all the good things I had heard about Douglas Preston, I expected a little more.
