Sue Monk Kidd’s debut novel The Secret Life of Bees is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story of families found in odd places.  Lily Owen, 14, lives a life with her abusive father, imaging a mother’s love which she barely remembers.  Escaping her home with her nanny Rosaleen, she runs to Tiburon, South Carolina, searching for information about her mother.  There she finds women who will change her life, and her idea of family.

I love the sense of sisterhood found in this book. Some consider this book a “feel-good” story, but most of us enjoyed the book in one of my classes awhile back, it was a nice break from all the academic novels.
